A Long Walk To Water

I read the book "A Long Walk To Water" this past summer. This book to me was very interesting. The book was mainly about a young boy whose town gets raided by a war happening in his country. The boy, whose name is Salva, hometown and walks with a huge group of people from his tribe to a land which he has only heard tales of. Salva originally was in school when the war came to his town. He left his family, and life behind to go survive. Salva walks, and walks for months until one day he sees someone he realizes in the crowd. His uncle had somehow joined this group of people. Salva stayed next to his uncle for the next 6 months. During this time they all were walking away from the war. Towards the end of the walk Salva finally says he cant go anymore. His uncle says "You see that tree from over there? Just to the tree and you can stop." His uncle did this for every time Salva doubted himself. The authors lesson in the book is to take one step at a time and you don't always have to rush everything. Salva walks until he reaches a camp for escapees from the war. He stays there for many years until he is picked to go to upstate New York to meet his new family.
This book taught me a huge lesson. The lesson is to take one step at a time. After reading this book I realized it was over a 20 year period. The author Linda Sue Park did an amazing job making it seem like the older that Salva got the more he remembered his childhood. I enjoyed this book a lot because it showed an everyday characters point of view of war coming to his village and how he took on these issues. This book also taught me the thought of persistence. Salva never gave up trying in this story and that motivates me to never give up on my problems.
